TIPS FOR WINNING CHIPS

JUDGING CRITERIA

Customers will be encouraged to text vote for your shop. If, through the customer voting process, your shop is ranked among the top shops in your region, your shop will be visited by a mystery judge during October.

The judge will assess your shop against the following criteria (see Terms and Conditions for full details):

  • Chips – fresh tasting, good colour and not greasy.
  • Your chips will also be sent away for independent laboratory testing to determine fat content. By following the New Zealand Standards for Deep Fried Chips in Independent Fast Food Outlets', which will be included in your Competition pack, you will be able to easily and effectively reduce the fat content of your chips. For example, straight-cut, thick chips (at least 13mm thick) that are cooked in a clean frying medium (fat or oil) of 175 - 180°C for between 3-4 mins and properly drained will have a lower fat content.
  • The 'New Zealand Standards for Deep Fried Chips in Independent Fast Food Outlets' poster and at least one of the Competition posters supplied in your Competition pack must be displayed in your shop throughout the Competition. Mystery judges will also be looking for Chip Group Online Training certificates displayed in your shop, as it shows that at least one staff member has completed the seven modules.
  • Customer service – helpful, courteous and prompt.
  • Hygiene – cleanliness of the interior and exterior of your shop, presentation of staff and adherence to good food handling techniques.
  • Stores entered may use any cooking oil/fat or chip during the Competition. However, the Chip Group recommends outlets should follow the guidelines as set out in the 'New Zealand Standards for Deep Fried Chips in Independent Fast Food Outlets'. Judging points will be allocated for use of these oils.
